Portland (pop: 64,249) is Maine's largest city and metropolitan area at around 612,000. It is that state's financial and retail center along with preserving their beautiful downtown, full of shops and restaurants. Attractions include the Maine Historical Society, the Portland Observatory, the Portland Museum of Art, Children's Museum of Maine, and the Harbor Museum. A very charming town indeed. It is the county seat of Cumberland County.
Nearby cities include Boston, Massachusetts, Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Manchester, New Hampshire. It is known as a haven for tourists visiting the state because of its lively downtown and historic Old Port along the Fore River.
The Portland Head Light in nearby Cape Elizabeth is a popular tourist attraction is often used as a symbol of the harbor and the surrounding communities.
Maine's largest city is hip and sophisticated with services rivaling those of larger urban cousins - shopping, places of worship, schools & colleges, museums, theaters, sports teams, etc. Convenient to transportation - land, air and marine - it offers what many others can't: low crime, clean air, clear water, safe parks, and world class hospitals. It is a perfect refuge for those wanting an urban lifestyle without hassle! A wide variety of housing exists whether single family homes, condominiums, or multi-family units, in price ranges that satisfy the needs of first time buyers or those trading up to larger properties! Most neighborhoods have access to city buses, public sewer, public water and natural gas.
The largest city in Maine, it is a port of entry, the commercial center of the state, and the rail, highway, shipping, and processing center for a vast farming, lumbering, and resort area. It is the eastern terminus of the Portland-Montreal oil pipeline and a major receiving port for goods destined for Montreal. Portland has shipyards, canneries (especially for fish), printing and publishing firms, foundries, and important lumbering, paper-milling, computer-chip, fishing, chemical, and textile industries. There is an international airport and ferry service to Yarmouth, N.S. The Univ. of Southern Maine and the Westbrook College campus of the Univ. of New England are in the city, as are numerous museums and a planetarium. The restored Old Port district is a tourist center.
Whether you are interested in exploring its 360-year history or checking out Portland's amazing cultural scene, Portland is an exciting town! With city excitement and small-town charm, Portland is a city second only to San Francisco in the number of exciting restaurants per capita. Picture cobblestone streets lined with Victorian era, red brick commercial buildings. Breathe the refreshing sea air while you enjoy the city's vibrant waterfront. Browse our one-of-a-kind Old Port shops and galleries. Portland is friendly, fun to walk around, and thankfully, Maine. Photo by Sunset Photography - tel: (207) 854-5184
